In The Wild

Every summer Vacation Bible School is attended by many. A major way that churches accommodate the children that come is with volunteers. In June, many high schoolers helped at their church including Deva Iker. During VBS, volunteers help take the kids each place they have to go while interacting with them to build relationships. Although Iker couldn’t work every day, she still made some great memories: “One time we were playing in a jumper and a first grader tackled me to the ground. As I was trying to get up, he called over his friends, and they kept tackling me. It was so wack because I couldn’t believe that first graders were stronger than me. Eventually, the lady monitoring the bounce house saw and told the kids to get off me so I wouldn’t be smothered  to death,” Iker said.

Bethany Dean also assisted VBS at her church, Olive Baptist.  “The week was fun and a lot of work, but it was worth it. The best part was leading someone to Christ and seeing that she got baptized the next day. I was helping the children’s minister’s assistant and part of the job was picking up crafts, so we had to get a big cart and roll it to all the craft rooms to get the bags of crafts. While going from room to room, one of us usually rode on the bottom of the cart while the other drove,” Dean said.

Lexi Holland helped at Immanuel Baptist Church with preschoolers. “At one point during the week this little boy, who is about four, was holding my hand while we were walking to another class, and he looked up at me and said, ‘So are you like my girlfriend or something? It was super funny and made my day. It was Wednesday so we had already been together for two days already, and he had decided I was his best friend,” Holland said.

Needless to say, the high school helpers thoroughly enjoyed their time helping with teaching little ones about Christ.
