United World Games

Dreams are important to us. It is what we hold on to and give us hope to persevere. When dreams come true it is something truly amazing. Paiten Rivera had all her basketball dreams come true when she was invited to the United World Games. “I got to be in the United World Games because of a basketball camp I went to, and they recommended me to go play for the student athlete world organization. The games are very similar to the Olympics. My friends and family were very excited for me and this opportunity and were proud that all my hard work has paid off,” Rivera said.

With these games being held in Austria, Rivera was given a chance to visit Italy also. While in Austria they visited the small town of Salzburg and went to a castle, a little village, and a lake. “The Lake was my favorite place to go to because you got to see different people from different countries and see their culture and meet new people. When we went down to the lake, my teammates and I all got really close with each other,” Rivera said.

Competing in these games was a new experience for Rivera. She played power forward, and her team won the final game. With the new experience, Rivera also learned new lessons. “I learned to try new things when the opportunity is presented to you. The advice I would give some new to the games is not to be intimidated and go your hardest because this could be a once-in-a-lifetime experience,” Rivera said
