People of Pace: Mia Goodwin

A group of athletes lift to their highest capabilities and beat personal records every day in the weight room. Not just any weight room, but the home of the Girls Weightlifting team. The Girls Weightlifting team exceeded their goals by winning their most recent meet at Pensacola High SchoolOne of the athletes who contributed to the win was fourth year weightlifter Mia Goodwin. During the meet, Goodwin lifted in bench and cleans. “My last lift on bench was 115 and clean was 130,” Goodwin saidEach lifter has three attempts to reach their max, and afterwards, the judges determine the winners by adding the lifter’s bench and clean. Goodwin lifted over her max by beating her personal record, and she won first place in her weight class. “I practiced during Thanksgiving break, so I knew I was going to PR,” Goodwin said.

Weightlifting is not just a sport of strength, but a sport of teamwork. When a teammate or even a competitor is struggling, everyone in the weight room jumps up to cheer them on. Goodwin’s fellow competitors and teammates cheering is Goodwin’s favorite memory from meets. “The last lift. It’s just you and one other girl competing, and everyone is watching and cheering us on,” Goodwin said. Goodwin represents competitiveness and teamwork on the team and shows it every week at weight meets.
